Ok you got burnt, but what now?

Ok it’s time to admit it, we probably have all been sunburnt at some stage in our life, and it is never intentional, but especially when the first few summer days arrive it’s too easy to unknowingly get burnt, or even God forbid your child gets burnt!

Our Dermal Clinician’s Lana & Yasmine, aka skin experts, have over 40 years experience and are all too familiar with how changes in the weather can wreak havoc on your skin and catch you by surprise. A change in season is a breath of fresh air, however Summer brings with it long, hot days and strong breezes. The solution to ensure you make it through Summer without the sun damage is a few simple changes to your skincare ritual. Rest assured, with our high performance skincare and skin secrets, you will be able to enjoy the outdoors and love your skin this season.

Did you know sunburn takes 6 weeks to heal, even though within days you may feel your skin is back to normal – deep down in your skin cells, your body is trying to repair your DNA to prevent it from mutating from the suns radiation. And this can lead to skin cancer. You cannot reverse this damage, however knowing how to treat your skin in the event you do get burnt, can help minimise the damage by speeding up the skin’s repairing process, subside the pain and if you get onto it fast enough, you’ll avoid blistering and massive shedding sheets of skin.

Sunburn is characterised by heat, swelling, pain and redness followed by tight, itchy then peeling skin and for most results in freckles, pigmented lesions or tan lines. These are all signs that you have been burnt. And as we all now know, a tan is not a healthy glow, but sunburn and your skin cells in trauma.

THE FIRST 24 HOURS

This is when your skin is red and radiating heat. Step away from the fake Aloe Vera gel and discover Aspect Soothing Gel. Use straight out of the fridge for some serious cooling and apply it liberally to your face and body as often as needed. Cool compresses will also help take the heat out to help you feel more comfortable and can even help reduce the chances of blistering.

DAY 2

Once the heat has subsided (depending on the level of damage this may take a couple of days or even longer) and your skin slowly fades from lobster red it is imperative to start to feed your skin with the nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins it needs to repair itself.

For your body, twice daily apply PCA Perfecting Neck & Decolletage Cream, not just a neck cream, this transformative body cream is packed with vitamins A, B, C and E, antioxidants and peptides to help the skin grow and heal.

For the face Société Skin Hydration Complex is packed with similar antioxidants, growth peptides and vitamin C in a light silky lotion for your face. Applied twice daily, Skin Hydration Complex combined with any of our niacinamide vitamin B Serums, will give your skin all the essential nutrients it needs to repair. PCA’s Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum is Yasmine and Lana’s go to vitamin B serum – super hydrating but light enough that it won’t cause congestion.

DAY 4

Your skin will have started to dry out by now and as long as the heat has completely subsided you can layer a heavier weight moisturiser to keep your cells hydrated, as the more hydrated they are the quicker they can heal.

For the body, after you have applied your perfecting cream, follow with Mira’s Hand Moroccan Moisturiser. Rich in anti-inflammatory oils and vitamin E, this moisturiser mimics the skin’s natural oils for day long nourishment.

For the face, after you have layered your reparative peptide packed serums, Aspect Probiotic Mask can be applied to the whole face including your eyelids and lips – don’t forget your ears too. The combination of probiotics, aloe, sunflower, olive, grapeseed and argan oils, as well as vitamin C and superfood pomegranate is simply divine – layer this onto your face at night and go straight to bed with it on.

WEEK 3

Be kind to your skin and super vigilant over the coming weeks, as mentioned even though you may think your skin has healed and recovered it is still super reactive and sensitive for 6 weeks. As your skin starts to calm down and heal you will notice that you redden easily, pigmentation starts to surface and most possibly a few new wrinkles have appeared too. It is therefore really important at week 3, as long as you feel your skin is no longer sensitive, peeling or overly dry to reintroduce and supercharge your skincare ritual with cosmeceutical actives that penetrate deep to make real change within your skin.

For the morning to prevent facial pigment and redness, Lana’s go-to’s are Aspect Pigment Punch + a gentle lightening serum and PCA Dual Action Redness Relief to reduce a red complexion and for the body you can’t go past Aspect Pigment Punch Body.

In the evening AHA acids and a vitamin A serum will begin to break down facial pigmentation, stimulate collagen and gently slough away the damaged skin cells. If you have oily, problematic skin you’ll love Cosmedix Define or for dryer skin types Cosmedix Defy and Serum 16 are exactly what your skin needs. And don’t forget PCA Body Therapy packed with 12% AHA acids for luxuriously soft and supply skin.

And just in case you were unsure if and when you need to wear sunscreen…

1. if you have a face or a body

2. and you are alive!

– then you need to wear it. every. single. day.
